Calculate engine displacement from bore and stroke
Displacement is the total volume swept by all the pistons, calculated from bore, stroke and cylinder count.
Formula: Displacement = π/4 × bore² × stroke × cylinders
What this number means
This calculates total engine displacement in cubic inches and litres from bore, stroke and cylinder count. It is the starting number for class legality, compression math and most other engine calculators.
What to change next
Use it to verify what an overbore or stroker crank actually buys before purchasing — a 0.030 in overbore adds less than most people expect, stroke adds more. Confirm your class displacement limit against the result, not the badge on the fender.
Worked example
A V8 with 4.030 in bore and 3.48 in stroke displaces ≈ 355 cubic inches (≈ 5.8 litres).
