Calculate mean and maximum piston speed from stroke
Mean piston speed is the average speed of the piston in feet per minute, from stroke and RPM — a standard measure of how hard internal parts are working.
Formula: Mean piston speed (ft/min) = stroke × RPM × 2 ÷ 12 · Peak ≈ mean × π/2
What this number means
This calculates mean piston speed from stroke and RPM, a direct measure of how hard the rotating assembly is working. Sustained mean speeds around 4,000 to 5,000 ft/min are the traditional serious-performance zone; beyond that, parts quality and oiling decide survival.
What to change next
If your planned shift RPM puts piston speed beyond what your rods, pistons and rings are built for, either shorten the stroke, upgrade the parts, or lower the shift point. Check this number before a stroker build, not after.
Worked example
A 3.48 in stroke at 6,500 RPM gives a mean piston speed of ≈ 3,770 ft/min.
